Interview With... a Nominator!

As some of you may already know, we have plans to interview nominators, nominees and random shippers to share with all of you. The idea is to make this a weekly thing, but that all depends on how many shippers want to volunteer*.

Two weeks ago we published our first interview with one our nominees, ScruffyLovin, and while the idea was to do one a week, we did not manage to get the next one done in time. Totally our fault, because all the nominees and nominators have been absolutely wonderful about filling out our questionnaires!

It was just that the committee was very busy with behind-the-scenes stuff as well as RL, and we weren't quite sure about the format we'd used - it felt a bit impersonal. So, we've taken this past week to really think on how we could change it and we hope you like what we've come up with for today's interview.

In this blogpost we want to introduce you lovely readers to one of our nominators, who has been very enthusiastic about our awards and nominating their favorites in our different media (fanfiction, fanvideos and fanart).

You might be wondering who this nominator is, so we shall stop beating around the bush and get on with it! Let us introduce you to...

Cyced!

This Irish shipper was a major fan of the show in her teens but, like many others, sort of lost interest after the exit of Richard Dean Anderson (playing Colonel/Brig General Jack O'Neill). It wasn't until a local channel began airing reruns in 2013 that she got hooked and looking up Stargate: SG-1 online, she discovered fanfiction - and became an instant shipper. Man, you've gotta love those instant shippers!

Cyced lurked on Gateworld in the beginning but after a few months she needed help hunting down a fic so, knowing how knowledgable and friendly the community is, she made an appeal on the forum and subsequently got drawn into all the different conversations. These days, she's active on the forum on a daily basis and we really enjoy her contributions. Coincidentally, it was also on the Gateworld forums that she first learned of the Sam & Jack Multimedia Awards!

"I think the Awards are a fantastic idea as they give me the opportunity to highlight the works I love to others and see what others enjoy in return"

Even though Cyced is a relatively new shipper, she's already read hundred of fanfics by her own admission. However, until recently, fanart and fanvids were pretty much unknown to her. Like we mentioned earlier, she has made quite a few nominations already and the determining factor for her was how memorable they were. She had a hard time putting some of the stories down, was eager to know what happened next and wondered what happened after the story had ended. To her, the gripping scenarios and characterizations made them enjoyable.

Something we are very curious about is what the appeal of the 'ship is to everyone. Cyced was more than happy to give her point of view on this very important matter and told us how she felt Sam and Jack were so well-conceived and three-dimensional. The fact that we never got any real confirmation makes the lure of fanworks so very appealing as well. Not to mention that there are certain scenarios and situations that could never have happened within the show's constraints at the time...

Another thing that is very important in shows/movies, is chemistry between the characters and according to many people, including Cyced, our favorite couple has it in spades! As a matter of fact, Cyced finds the chemistry too hard to deny to stray too far from this ship, although she has dabbled in some Sam/Daniel fiction in the past. Ah well, can't account for taste, eh? Nah, just kidding! We don't demand people only ship Sam/Jack to be able to nominate fanworks or be nominated. Everyone is free to dabble in whatever ship and/or fandom they like...

Speaking of nominations... as you can imagine we would like to know how people feel about the Sam & Jack Multimedia Awards. Cyced thinks of this as an opportunity to highlight her favorite fanworks. Perhaps more importantly, she sees it as a great way to thank the authors, artists and vidders for the free work they have put into their works from which others get so much enjoyment.

But that just happens to be how she feels about it. What do you think?
