Writing is not what I do, it's who I am.

Merriam-Webster defines fan fiction as : "stories involving popular fictional characters that are written by fans and often posted on the Internet — called also fanfic"

It doesn't seem like much of a definition to describe the phenomenon of creating entire worlds, new storylines, and basically rewriting and rebuilding Stargate and Sam and Jack in any way we want. We do it not only to keep reliving their adventures, but in many cases so that we can rewrite or fix those moments that we know should have happened on screen and most especially in our Shippy world, to make Sam and Jack get together no matter what the cost. Whether it's done with humour, angst, in a different universe, or so steamily that it could never have been on air, the options in the world of fanfic are limitless.

The stories created by the nominees in this category have all gone above and beyond in ways we never could have imagined. The characterizations are spot on, the plotlines are dramatic and at times heart-wrenching, and they all leave us wanting...for more!

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

The words of Degas ring perfectly true, even in the world of FanArt.  For, in this world, these wonderfully talented individuals take scenes from our favorite ship and blend them together with other scenes, textures, gifs, drawings, paintings, and just about anything else they can get their hands (or mouse) on.  Their ability to create such unique pieces using the same materials and subject matter is absolutely amazing.

The nominees for Best Artist each have their own unique style which makes choosing just one so very difficult!

Choose a favorite holiday? When Sam & Jack are involved? Impossible!

Ah, the holidays.  A time for family, friends, levity, and heart-felt emotion.  It's no wonder holidays are a shipper favorite.  From taking Sam and Jack completely AU to simply taking them off-world, any holiday can provide plenty of fodder for a writer.

Unsurprisingly, this was a popular category.  Let's take a look at some of the nominations!

Best Holiday!

Fics in this category must be centered around the celebration or observance of one or more holidays. Holidays need not be publicly recognized.

Llama Llama there's more drama!

These stories make us laugh, they make us cry, and the keep us on the edge of our seats. There's torture, there's war, there's the general angst of Sam and Jack being forced to weather another storm in their tumultuous relationship. Whether they are keeping us in tears, or keeping our characters in stitches, the rest of the stories nominated in the category of Best Drama will definitely keep you wanting for more.

I Vid Therefore I Am

We've gasped over the angst. We've sighed over the fluff. We've oohed and awed over the songs that turn us on and turn us to mush when they accompany our favorite scenes.  They make us squee. They make us laugh. They make us bang our heads against the table because we just can't take it anymore.  But, once the video ends and the credits role, we find ourselves compelled to hit replay, give them a thumbs up, and save them to our favorite list because we just have to be able to find their work again.

The vidders who've been nominated for Best Creator have all proven their talents.  They use images of Sam and Jack along with color, effects, music, and their own creative visions to produce unbelievable videos that keep us coming back for more.

Must you be so dramatic?

When it comes to real life, nobody wants a lot of drama. When it comes to Stargate fanfiction and shipping Sam and Jack, however, we say "Bring it on!"

Whether there's angsty separations, creepy significant others, fluff, four weddings and a funeral, we aren't truly happy unless there's something dramatic going on. They create it, get in the middle of it, and just can't help it when the find themselves in dire straits. We welcome their struggle because in the end they all love, um...live happily ever after, right?

Best Drama!

Drama is a genre that relies on the emotional and relational development of realistic characters. Often, dramatic themes are taken from intense, real life issues. Whether heroes or heroines are facing a conflict from the outside or a conflict within themselves, Drama aims to tell an honest story of human struggles.

Celebrating Sam Carter, part II

Last week, we blogged about a couple of the fics nominated in the Best Characterization of Sam Carter category. There were some awesome stories in there that read just like in the show when it came to Sam; today, it's time for the other half of the fics in this wonderful category.

The Continuation of the Best Characterization of Sam Carter Category!

Tuesday, October 7, 2014

Who are these people?

So you start reading a fic by one of your favorite authors and alongside our favorite foursome there's a new character. You don't know their name. You don't know what they do. And you find out that they are not just any new character, they are a character who plays a big role in the plotline of the story. You freeze, you pause, you debate...do I keep reading and give this "new" person a chance or do I change the page with a click of my mouse and go back to what I know?

Like all of the fiction nominated for these awards, the fiction nominated in the category of Best Original Character all have awesome storylines. What sets them apart is the addition of some great original characters who are woven so well into the tapestry of the story that you won't even remember that they are not usually a part of the SGC.

Best Original Character!

Nominations in this category can be works of any length, genre or rating. Original characters must appear in more than three scenes and have dialogue. The work is being judged on how well the author has developed an original character, not necessarily on the work as a whole.

Ready for some giggles?

After all the angsty, dark and twisty stuff from the past couple of posts, it's time for something a little bit lighter. Just beware, your cheeks might start cramping from all the grinning and/or laughing!

Best Comedy!

Fics in this category must include elements of humor or comedy. Crack fics are nominated in this category.

Sunday, October 5, 2014

Bet you didn't see that one coming!

The plot twist.  That part of any story where the bottom falls out and makes you re-wind (or re-read) to find out where you'd missed the clues.  Because even if we couldn't see it coming, we really, really want to once we know it's there...don't we?

We included this category for just that purpose - the moment when your expectations are turned on their heads and suddenly you're looking at a story in a different light.  It's fun, it's exciting... it's a plot a twist.  And we've got several on the ballot for you!

Best Plot Twist

Fics in this category are being judged on how unexpected a plot twist is as well as how deftly that plot twist is handled/resolved.

Because a little angst just isn't enough!

It's that time again.  Grab a glass of wine, some tissues, your favorite afghan...we're settling in for the rest of the Angst nominees.

Category: Best Angst

Just to spice things up a little, we're going to rock and roll on this one a little differently and present you with some juicy tid-bits from the stories themselves or some telling reviews.  You're just going to have to read on to find out. ;)

From friends to lovers...

Some claim it was love at first sight. There are those who think it was just lust at first sight and, well, can you blame them? Both of them look ridiculously hot! Others think they didn't even like each other, or at least not in that way.

Perhaps it's like the chicken and the egg... which came first, the attraction/lust/love or friendship? Whichever you prefer, there's no denying there are some fabulous opportunities for fanfiction writers here. That's why we decided to have the following category...

Best Friendship/Pre-ship!

Fics in this category must highlight the friendship between Sam and Jack and/or their relationship prior admitting to themselves or each other that they have romantic feelings for one another.

If a picture is worth a thousand words...

...then these nominees are priceless!

You've heard people talk about Photoshop and every smart phone now allows you to download apps that edit your photos. But posting a pic on Instagram and changing the coloring or shadow effect is not the type of photomanipulation we are featuring in our Photo-Based Art category.

Although it is exactly what it sounds like, photomanipulation in fanart is something completely different from touching up the family photo from last Thanksgiving.  These artists use popular pictures of our favorite celebs or, most often, screen captures they've either made themselves, or gotten from an online source. Once they have the pics they like they transform them into whatever they want.

Some of the nominees focus on manipulating the color schemes or adding their own dialogue to create a screen cap fic, while others take images and put them together to form something completely new.  All we know is that we love the way they've enhanced our favorite images of Sam and Jack.

From a bright-eyed, bushy-tailed captain to a seasoned commander - fandom celebrates Sam Carter

Sam Carter. One of the best female role models on TV, ever. Reason enough to inspire a whole category on its own: the Best Characterization of Sam.

A strong and intelligent character who doesn't rely on her looks to help her get what she wants. No, Sam is just a kick-ass soldier with a brilliant mind, who just happens to be an attractive woman as well. Not that there's anything wrong with being good-looking - after all, none of the men on SG-1 could be called ugly by any stretch of the imagination.

Although Sam's first appearance wasn't the best - even the biggest fans have to admit there were some cringe-worthy lines there - she managed to pique everyone's interest and quickly proved her worth to the men. Just because she's a girl doesn't mean she can't fire an M5/P90 with deadly accuracy, pull a brilliant plan out of her six or blow up a sun!

Clearly, she's not your typical female character in a TV show. She's not perfect either; like everyone, she has her flaws (two psycho ex-fiances, albeit in varying degrees, for starters) and that's what makes her so great. Sam is a genius in a field usually dominated by men and an officer in the United States Air Force - or "this man's army", in the words of Janet Fraiser's ex-husband - but like any normal person she makes her share of mistakes and isn't afraid to own up to them.

Her intelligence and strong persona can be difficult to write for even the most experienced writers. Everyone interprets certain behavior and interactions differently, which complicates things like characterization but deep down there are certain things that are just Sam and everyone can agree on that. Like how despite Sam's analytic mind she has a big heart and isn't always the most confident in her own abilities - not to mention her bad track record with men. The following fanfictions have all been nominated because the authors did a great job when writing Sam!

Well, that's enough of us going on and on about the awesomeness that is Samantha Carter. Let's start with the first half of the nominated fics in this category!

Best Characterization of Sam Carter!

Enter the cavern at your own risk...

We've got it!  You want it!  So, we're bringing on the angst...again.

No matter the genre, when it comes to Sam and Jack, there just has to be some angst involved in telling their story. Destined to be together yet constantly forced apart, our favorite couple continually find themselves pining for one another. But, whether they are literally worlds apart or desperately trying to have "normal" lives, happily ever after isn't always how the story ends.

So, make yourself a cuppa, curl up in your favorite chair, and get lost in the Cavern with these fiction nominees for Best Angst.

Director's Cut

Still wondering how the amazing S/J vidders are able to cut down hours of footage from our favorite show and mix them together to create something new and exciting (and especially shippy)?  Here's five more nominees in the category for Best Video Editing. Some will make you squee and others will warrant a big *shippy sigh,* but all of them are fantastic!

Another day, another universe...

About a month ago, we wrote a blog post about a few of the nominations in the Best Alternate Universe category. Today, it's time for part two!

Alternate universes are often confused with alternate realities, probably because outside of sci-fi alternate realities aren't very common - and if they are, they're usually called AUs. What makes a story an alternate universe then? Well, imagine your favorite characters stripped of everything except their personalities (there might be differences here based on different life experiences, though), get picked up and placed in a whole new sandbox! Suddenly, there is no Stargate, no Air Force and no aliens. Yet, there is still friendship, chemistry and in the case of our favorite ship - a whole lotta UST!Think... The Changeling, the origin of the very popular fireman!universe.

Don't worry if the differences aren't entirely clear yet - just take a look at remaining nominations in this category and see if you understand it after reading these fabulous stories!

The continuation of the Best Alternate Universe Category!

AU fics are defined as stories that are set in a completely different environment, like the firefighter universe from The Changeling.

Cut it out!

10 Seasons.
214 episodes.
160 hours of footage.
From beginning to end, 6 and 1/2 straight days of Stargate SG-1!  Oh, and that doesn't include the hours and hours of extra features and deleted and behind-the-scenes footage that never made it to air (Hello, Trio confirmation anyone?).

So how does a fan vidder decide which Sam/Jack scenes will make the cut? Sexy or sappy?  Humorous or angsty? So many emotions to choose and so many musical choices to make them great.  Get ready for a ride on a great big emotional roller coaster as we take a look at the first half of the nominees for Best Video Editing.

From a man on a brink to 'The Man' - fandom celebrates Jack O'Neill

Jack O'Neill.  For many he's enough to inspire a litany all on his own.  For that reason, the Best Characterization of Jack category was born.

He's a tough character to write.  With his distinctive speech patterns, O'Neill-isms, projected personality and soft under-belly, writing him is like trying to level a balance with pinfeathers.

But when a writer gets it right, it's undeniable.  Jack O'Neill jumps off the page and the reader can practically hear his voice and feel his emotion.

This category is deep with incredibly written Jack O'Neill.  Let's see what the readers had to say.

Whaddya say we mix things up a bit?

For some of our artists it just isn't enough for them to stick with one medium when making Sam and Jack pretties.  So what are you gonna do when you are inspired to combine pics and gifs and digital drawings? You come up with great pieces of art like the ones featured in the Art category for Best Mixed-Media.

Say what?

One of the most important things about writing fanfiction is getting the dialogue just right. It's not only about characterization and getting the characters' voices down on paper, but also phrasing it correctly without using dialogue tags. Sometimes, the way words are spoken say so much more than they seem to and it's difficult to convey that through written words.

The Committee decided the Awards would be a great opportunity place this kind of excellent writing in the spotlight.

Best Dialogue

Nominations in this category can be works of any length, genre or rating. The work is being judged on the quality of the dialogue, not necessarily on the work as a whole.

Alone we can do so little...

...together we can do so much. -- Helen Keller

How does SG-1 continually beat the odds? What makes them so good at what they do?  Teamwork.  They are all so different and yet play to the talents of one another so well that it seems they literally can overcome any obstacle that is placed in their path.

Featuring our favorite original foursome, Hammond, Janet, Vala, Cam, Landry and many others, the videos nominated for Best Team Vid all illustrate why you just can't live your life without the people who love and support you.

The Others

As you know, these Awards are all about our favorite ship - Sam/Jack. However, that does not mean we don't like the other characters from Stargate: SG-1. As a matter of fact, most of us shippers love (almost) all of the other characters, from the mains to regulars to guests. Aside from having great personalities, most of them are also considered fellow shippers, so the Committee decided to include a special category for Best Characterization of Other Canon Character!

We have four fanfics that were nominated in this category, for different characters. Well, we'll let you see for yourself.

Best Characterization of Other Canon Characters

Nominations in this category can be works of any length, genre or rating. The work is being judged on how well the author portrayed any canon character other than Jack O'Neill or Samantha Carter, not necessarily on the work as a whole. Nominations in this category must include the name of the character to be considered. However, there must be at least some shippy undertones in the story for it to qualify.

Hate them, love them, love to hate them...Villains are one of the favored archetypes in fiction.

Like it or not, there's something compelling about a good villain.  Whether the stereotypical bad guy, sympathetic anti-hero or the detestable hero, we all love to hate or hate to love the dastardly man (or woman) shrouded in black nature.

As we put a spotlight on the nominees from various categories, it's fun to dig into and wallow in these characters that make us love to see them be bad.  Maybe we root for them.  Maybe they're the catalyst for major change in our favorite characters.  Maybe we just like a little good, old fashioned whump.  But no matter which way you slice it, we're not alone.

Check out some of the nominees below and what fans had to say about them!

Crossing the Quantum Divide

Don't worry, we haven't forgotten about those last three fics that were nominated in Best Alternate Reality! We were just trying to highlight as many different fan works as possible over the past few days and since we're only human (and have real lives), we haven't gotten around to doing them all yet.

So, without further ado, here are the last three fanfics from the Best Alternate Reality category!

BtS: paring down categories

In the time between closing the nomination period and voting opening, certain categories were pared down. This has been listed as something that might occur in the rules since we started but we still got questions about it from fellow shippers. So, here's our answer...

Wednesday, September 10, 2014

Every Jack has his Sam...

As shippers we can't help but love Sam and Jack together, but we all have our favorite Stargate characters.  Some only read S/J fic, others like Daniel-centric or team adventures. And luckily, like fanfiction, there are as many different kinds of vids as there are vidders to make them.

Soooooo, who's in the mood for a little Jack today?

This next group of vids are our nominees for Best Jack Centric videos.  Watch, enjoy, and try not to get too distracted...sorry, what were we talking about?

The following videos are all nominated for the category of Best Comedy.  We dare you not to snicker, smirk, or laugh out loud as you get lost in the hilarity.

"Under no circumstances is it to be used to travel through time..."

Over the weekend, we shared a couple of highlights with you from our Best Alternate Timeline category. Today, we have a few more! They vary from different takes on episodes set in an alternate timeline to time travel, be that accidental or otherwise. Today's selection has long and short fics, so there's something for everyone!

Are you ready? Grab your gear and step into your jumper because here's...

The Continuation of the Best Alternate Timeline Category!

AT fics are defined as stories that involve a way to travel in time and change the past and/or future, thereby altering events that result in a different timeline.
Examples from the show are 2010, Moebius, Unending and Continuum.

If you are reading this post, you know how to use a computer.  But, most of you probably cannot use your computer to do the things our nominees have done. Instead of using a pen and paper to create these wonderful drawings, the artists nominated in this category have used their mouse and keyboard to draw, paint, and color. Who needs Crayola when you've got an electronic carousel to work with?

Best Computer Drawn

Nominations in this category can be any art created by the sole use of computer drawing software.

"One little change has a ripple effect and it affects everything else."

One theme that is pretty much inescapable for science fiction is time travel: Stargate SG-1 played with this theme several times, even including actual time travel episodes like 1969, 2010Moebius and the Continuum movie. Of course, fanfiction writers just love to pick up where TPTB left off or, er, improve an alternate timeline because they felt it was lacking... something. Sometimes it's just the 'ship that needs an extra bit of attention but there are also some great stories out there involving alternate timelines that are very original.

In today's post, we're gonna take a look at a number of nominations for the Sam & Jack Multimedia Awards in the...

Micro fiction or drabbles?

If you are a big fan of really short stories, then you might already be familiar with fanfic terminology like micro-fiction and drabbles. However, there's a good chance some of you may not know what one or both of them entails. So, we asked a very loyal, die-hard shipper to help us explain what micro-fiction and drabbles are; are they the same thing or are there differences?

Without further ado, let us introduce you to Doctor Daniel Jackson who, unlike normal briefings, will give us a very brief explanation to keep with the theme!

Fork in the road stuff

At the beginning of the week we brought you the third blog post about the amazing fics nominated in the Best Alternate Reality category, but we're not done yet; here are three more!

Two of them are a few years old and one is by a new author, but that doesn't necessarily make one more popular than the other. All three are relatively long, multi-chapter stories though, so make yourself comfortable before settling in to read!

The more things change, the more they stay the same...

At one time or another, everyone has toyed around with the idea of what life would have been like if everything were completely different.  One of the reasons we immerse ourselves in science fiction is that frequently we get to see imaginings of our favorite characters play out completely different circumstances on the screen.

Sometimes it's difficult to decide just exactly what sort of "alternate" a story might be.  Is the story the result of an alteration to the timeline?  How about familiar characters stepping into an alternate reality or alternate versions of our beloved characters suddenly becoming a part of our familiar reality?  What if everything changed?

Stargate: SG-1 had a lot of fun playing around with the notion of alternate, well, everything.  In one of the most interesting uses of the convention in modern science fiction history, The Changeling thrust SG-1 into the world of firefighters.  We got to play around with similar personalities in brand new circumstances - a tall order, when you think about it, for a show that specializes in brand new circumstances.

Fanficion writers have long enjoyed taking their favorite characters outside of the worlds built by the show-runners.  It seems like no fandom escapes the phenomenon.  The Sam/Jack ship is no different.  So join us as we celebrate a few of the nominees for...

Chuck Lorre has nothing on fandom

One of the most popular ways for people to jump into fanfiction - both reading and writing - is the ever-present episode tag.  Tags allow fans to speculate on what may have happened after the credits rolled.  The Sam/Jack ship is no stranger to this format.  Since the early episodes the fandom has been speculating about exactly what may have transpired between the officers once the screen faded to black.

As we showcase our nominees, here's some of the things readers are saying about a few of the Best Tag nominees:

If you or someone you know is on this list, we have nominations waiting to be accepted.  Please contact us (or have the author contact us) at nominations[at]samandjackawards[dot]com.

If you're on this list but you've already accepted a nomination, please get in touch with us anyway.  It means we've received one or more additional nominations since we've last spoken with you or we've inadvertently misplaced your acceptance.

Please spread the word via whatever social media platform(s) you use.  All nominations must be made, processed and accepted by August 31, 2014.

The complete list of missing nominees is after the jump.

Obviously, the time continuum has been disrupted.

One of the favorite conventions in science fiction is time travel.  In the Stargate Universe we were given several possible modes of time travel: the Stargate interacting with solar flares, time machines, even time dilation fields.  Fanfiction authors, in true fashion, have capitalized on both the canon time travel episodes as well as new time travel opportunities for the team.

Here we'll highlight three of the nominees for Best Alternate Timeline.

Nominated and Nominating...an interview with akachankami

A self-professed lurker on Gateworld, akachankami learned of the Sam and Jack awards when one of her shipper friends tweeted about it.  She loved the idea of the awards and was excited to talk to us about why she made her nomination and why she continues to help keep the ship alive as a vidder herself.

"I meant to say it was a great video, but I fainted on my keyboard..."

Derivative works are difficult enough to write let alone to completely re-purpose someone else's edited video to create your own spin on well-loved characters; and yet, that's exactly what our incredibly talented vidders do.  Angst has always been one of the most popular emotions to portray, so it's no big surprise that the genre has bled into fan-made videos.

Here are several of our nominees for Best Angst in the Video medium.

Mirror, mirror, mirror... which is the fairest reality of them all?

We're back with more fork in the road stuff! As all you loyal Stargate: SG-1 fans know, there is an infinite number of ever-growing alternate realities, each existing and evolving concurrently with our own, according to the multiverse theory of quantum physics. Basically, anything that can happen will happen, if not in this reality then in another. So, while our Sam and Jack decided to follow the regs, an alternate version of them from a parallel reality might not - fork in the road stuff!

Earlier this week we highlighted a few nominations that dealt with alternate realities and in the next post you can see some more. So, get geared up and don't forget to pick up the quantum mirror's remote before you step through!

Men Ship Too? An Interview with a Nominator...

Want to know what's keeping this amazing fandom going and keeping the awards committee on their toes?

It's all of you, of course! Without awesome fans to promote the work of other awesome fans, this whole awards process would be pointless.

With that in mind, today we offer you some insight into the mind of someone we don't often get to hear about...the male shipper! What's that? You didn't know that there are guys out there with fluffy feelings and angsty ambitions? Think again!

Down the Rabbit Hole

When it comes to fanfiction, everyone has their favorite genres. However, it can't be denied that Alternate Reality (often mistakenly called AU) is very popular. And how can it not be when it covers many different ways for our favorite characters to get together, from quantum mirrors to non-existing frat regs?

With a category so popular, it is not surprising that there are a lot of nominations already. Today, we'll take take you down the rabbit hole and visit worlds that are just slightly different from the canon we know and love by highlighting a selection of nominated stories.

Category: Best Alternate Reality

AR fics are defined as stories that start in an Alternate Reality (i.e. it has Doctor Carter), are clearly set in an alternate reality as they do not follow canon ( i.e. established relationship, or events that happen at the wrong time), or interact with other realities via the quantum mirror or Stargate anomalies.

Interview with Sal R... a Nominee!

So we've been getting back into the swing of bringing you blog posts and one of the things we're really excited about are the interviews we do with both the nominees and the nominators.

For this installment we're bringing you an article on Sal R (also known in fandom as Sally Reeve and to the rest of the world as published author Sally Malcolm) - an institution in the Sam/Jack fandom.

We recently highlighted several fanfiction nominations from the Adventure category.  But, we have so many great nominees that we couldn't bring all of them to you in one post!

So, change into your BDUs, grab your tac vest and your P90, because we're stepping through the gate to find alien planets, crashed ships, strange artifacts, missing stargates, and yes, we really are off to see the wizard.

Just call her JanSam Drew

These awards are most certainly a group effort!  Our committee is constantly going above and beyond what even we think might be possible.

We've also had a huge amount of support from the fandom.  As many of you might be aware, we're desperately seeking some lost nominees.  Thanks to GateWorld member JanSam, we've been able to strike quite a few names off our list!

We've named her our unofficial Private Eye!  So, thank you, JanSam!  We really couldn't have done some of this without you.

We are keeping to our strict schedule to make sure we can give you all the best experience for our first year hosting the Awards, so here's another interview with someone whose work has been nominated for the Sam & Jack Multimedia Awards!

At the moment of posting this blog she has received five nominations! Well, let's introduce you all to...

Life is a boomerang. What you give, you get.

We are thrilled that the Sam and Jack Multimedia Awards have attracted so much attention and participation!  It's exciting to discover how many people are still active in this ship and fandom.

We initially conceived these awards as a way to keep people interested and active, but what we soon discovered was a community that was vibrant and alive without any help from us at all!  To that end, we can envision bring these awards to the Sam/Jack shipper community in the coming years.

We're staffed by a group of volunteers who sit on our committee and turn out fantastic amounts of work. But, just because the labor is free doesn't mean that these awards don't come at a cost.

Lions and Tigers and Bears Oh My!

Who's up for a little adventure?

There are just as many reasons for why fans like SG-1 as there are fans to watch the show.  Some watch for the action, some watch for the science fiction, and some watch for the Ship of course! It's with all of this in mind that the categories were created for the Sam and Jack awards.

One of the things we wanted to do was bring you a taste of what other fans are saying about the works you've nominated or enjoyed. Aren't you curious?

C'mere and join us on a shippy adventure.

Category : Best Adventure

Fics nominated in this category must include elements of action or adventure.

Interview With Steadfast... a Nominator!

A new interview! We will keep the introductions short this time; the fanfiction readers and writers among you might recognize her name, as she is a very loyal shipper who has reviewed probably just about every story she has ever read!

Here is...

It's Ship Day! It's Ship Day! It's Ship Day!

Every year since 2002, on July 28, shippers around the world gather together in Gateworld's Characters and Relationships Forum to celebrate Ship Day!

What is Ship Day and why do we celebrate it?

It's simple really.  On July 28, 2000, Showtime aired, for the first time, the Season 4 episode Divide and Conquer.  Every S/J shipper knows that this is the episode when Jack professes to care about Sam a lot more than he's supposed to!

So today we invite you to take a trip on over to the GW Ship Day thread, enjoy the discussion, the fics, artwork, and vids that are posted and don't forget you can nominate your favorites for a Sam & Jack Multimedia Award!

But before you go, over the last year, the Sam Carter/Jack O'Neill Ship Discussion Thread has been hosting a Stargate SG-1 Rewatch.  We thought that in honor of today, we would highlight the most recent review for Divide and Conquer!

We're Back in the Blogosphere! Ship On!

Eek!  Somehow we let ourselves be stolen away from our wonderful blogs!  No worries.  As we are sure you have seen through our posts on Twitter, Facebook, tumblr, and Pinterest, the nominations have been rolling in and we've got more wonderful works of art, videos, and fanfiction to keep you all squeeing for days and weeks to come.  You can check out our website for the newest nominations in your favorite categories.

And now a look behind the scenes...

We've told you a little bit about ourselves and why we've become a part of the Sam and Jack Multimedia Awards this year, but you might not have realized what the committee has had to do in order to make it possible for us to work together on this amazing project.

Interview With... a Nominee!

The weekend is in sight for most of us, which means it's time for another interview! We like to alternate the nominees, nominators and random shippers*, so this week we're going with a nominee. We have specific questions for the three different kinds of shippers and this will be the first time we're doing the new format for a nominee. Hopefully, you will like it and by the end feel like you've gotten to know this shipper a bit better.

When we approached her for this interview she was more than happy to participate and told us all about her involvement in the Stargate: SG-1 fandom, shipping, and writing.

Okay, no more stalling. Today's interview is with...

Weekly Digest of Changes

The title this week is slightly different: after a brief discussion the committee has decided we will not keep up the weekly list of website changes. There simply aren't enough changes these days to make a whole list of at the end of the week, so we're gonna include updates on our website, the Awards in general and all our social media accounts in the weekly digest of changes.

Let's get started!

Interview With... a Nominator!

As some of you may already know, we have plans to interview nominators, nominees and random shippers to share with all of you. The idea is to make this a weekly thing, but that all depends on how many shippers want to volunteer*.

Two weeks ago we published our first interview with one our nominees, ScruffyLovin, and while the idea was to do one a week, we did not manage to get the next one done in time. Totally our fault, because all the nominees and nominators have been absolutely wonderful about filling out our questionnaires!

It was just that the committee was very busy with behind-the-scenes stuff as well as RL, and we weren't quite sure about the format we'd used - it felt a bit impersonal. So, we've taken this past week to really think on how we could change it and we hope you like what we've come up with for today's interview.

In this blogpost we want to introduce you lovely readers to one of our nominators, who has been very enthusiastic about our awards and nominating their favorites in our different media (fanfiction, fanvideos and fanart).

You might be wondering who this nominator is, so we shall stop beating around the bush and get on with it! Let us introduce you to...

Weekly Digest of Website Changes

This week we have received lots of new nominations which makes us incredibly happy and we shall soon start posting nom overviews on the blog too. However, this little blog post is about the website, not the blog. So, onward we go!

BtS: the Nomination Process...

At the very moment of writing this, we have just passed 60 nominations in three different media (fiction, vids and art) for our awards. Not bad for a little less than three weeks, eh?

Actually, we have received a lot more nominations... So, why aren't they all there? Well, that's exactly what this post is about.

Interview With... a Nominee!

As some of you may already know, we have plans to interview nominees, nominators and random shippers and share these with all of you. We're planning on making this a weekly thing, but that all depends on how many shippers want to volunteer*.

Now, onto this week's interview with... ScruffyLovin!

Weekly Digest of Website Changes

And the nominations came pouring in this week.  We were incredibly busy with them, hence our lack of other blog posts - but we're very grateful for everybody joining in! Thanks everyone!  Here's what we did over at the website:

Weekly Digest of Website Changes

It was a busy first week for the Awards website!  Thanks to the Awards team and some very helpful members of the Sam and Jack 'ship community, we made a bunch of changes to the website that may interest you:

New Committee Member!

We are really pleased to announce Neverendingimagination (aka Nei) has joined the committee! Many of you may already know her from Gateworld, her artwork or her fanfiction but we would still like to formally introduce her.

How It All Began...

The committee members came into the fandom in different ways and at different times, but they all ended up on the forums of Gateworld – a wonderful website every fan of the Stargate franchise should check out. Most, if not all of them met on the Sam/Jack Appreciation thread and over the years interacted with each other on varying levels and through various means.

One of the things they have in common is their love for shippy fan works, so perhaps their membership of the committee shouldn’t come as a surprise. However, appreciating and creating fan works is not the same as organizing a multimedia awards competition! There is a lot of organizing and behind-the-scenes work involved in such projects, which is something Amara realized when she first came up with the idea to organize one – there’s a reason why there are so few left, after all – and so she dismissed it at first.
