Down the Rabbit Hole

When it comes to fanfiction, everyone has their favorite genres. However, it can't be denied that Alternate Reality (often mistakenly called AU) is very popular. And how can it not be when it covers many different ways for our favorite characters to get together, from quantum mirrors to non-existing frat regs?

With a category so popular, it is not surprising that there are a lot of nominations already. Today, we'll take take you down the rabbit hole and visit worlds that are just slightly different from the canon we know and love by highlighting a selection of nominated stories.

Category: Best Alternate Reality

AR fics are defined as stories that start in an Alternate Reality (i.e. it has Doctor Carter), are clearly set in an alternate reality as they do not follow canon ( i.e. established relationship, or events that happen at the wrong time), or interact with other realities via the quantum mirror or Stargate anomalies.

Sam visits an AU and has an epiphany.

A very short summary that doesn't really do this ficlet any justice. It's got romance and fluff and was written almost eight years ago, but it's still loved among fanfic readers all these years later.

After stepping through the gate with her team, Sam is the only one exiting the stargate... except it isn't her 'gate. She has somehow managed to land herself in an alternate reality, where she's not a lieutenant colonel but an actual brigadier general - a married brigadier general...

Her curiosity is naturally piqued but she doesn't have to wait long to find out who, exactly, her counterpart is married to and what happened in this reality for it to unfold differently from her own.

The story also briefly touches on the fight with the Ori and even the mysterious Furlings are mentioned...

Does this sound like your kind of story? Check it out now!

Jack O'Neill is a man waiting to die, and she's the only one brave enough not to look away.

A multi-chapter story set during Stargate (the 1994 movie) and also bridges the gap between the original movie and the pilot of Stargate: SG-1. Of course, with Annerb being a big shipper, she fixed the movie's story by throwing Sam into the mix.

"Jack's flaws are deep and dovetail nicely with Sam's baggage. "
- i.m. nell

The fic was first published over four years ago but that has not diminished its popularity. As a matter of fact, many shippers will recommend this story and others by Annerb to those new to the Sam/Jack ship. Her stories often have a well-thought-out and mature plot, plenty of ship and great characterization - this story is no different. It starts with Sam and Jack running into each other, almost by chance, and it ends with nothing less than complicated as befits our favorite ship.

Also not unimportant: the story features many canonical characters, including more screen time for Charles Kawalsky and some great interactions with General Hammond. But perhaps it's the scenes with Teal'c in general and his interactions with Sam in particular and Teal'c that makes it really stand out from many other fics that include a alternate version of the show's pilot.

What happens to Janet and the rest of the alternate SG-1 team? How does it affect our reality?

A fanfiction that is set in one of the canonical alternate reality experiences of the later seasons: Ripple Effect. You remember, the episode with all those SG teams coming through the gate, including one with their very own Janet Fraiser still alive and kicking! At the end of the episode, our SG-1 says goodbye to Daniel, Martouf, Mitchell and Janet, handing the cure to the Prior plague over to them to use in their own universe.

"I found myself with tears in my eyes at numerous moments - the sad times, as well as good moments."
- hedwiggins

DramaLexy saw an opportunity and picked up where this episode left off, taking us back through the gate with this alternate SG-1 and showing us what their reality looks like.

Living up to her pen name, this drama has great emotional, moving and uplifting moment, with family being its most important theme. When it comes to SG-1 we all know family doesn't necessarily mean related by blood, which is something this story showcases wonderfully.
