If a picture is worth a thousand words...

...then these nominees are priceless!

You've heard people talk about Photoshop and every smart phone now allows you to download apps that edit your photos. But posting a pic on Instagram and changing the coloring or shadow effect is not the type of photomanipulation we are featuring in our Photo-Based Art category.

Although it is exactly what it sounds like, photomanipulation in fanart is something completely different from touching up the family photo from last Thanksgiving.  These artists use popular pictures of our favorite celebs or, most often, screen captures they've either made themselves, or gotten from an online source. Once they have the pics they like they transform them into whatever they want.

Some of the nominees focus on manipulating the color schemes or adding their own dialogue to create a screen cap fic, while others take images and put them together to form something completely new.  All we know is that we love the way they've enhanced our favorite images of Sam and Jack.

Best Photo-Based

Nominations in this category are photos which have been edited or otherwise manipulated through the use of computer software like Photoshop. They can be of any rating as long as the artwork adheres to the Rules and any real-life pictures (i.e., not screen captures from the show) have been treated with respect.

Usually we see bright colors and gifs that practically dance when angievonasgard brings us something that is totally shippy S/J. This photo-based piece in black and white speaks volumes about her talent and gives these classic S/J scenes a whole new look. You want to feel like it's dark and almost foreboding, but the happiness truly comes through despite the color scheme. There's a permanence in black and white, like something that is written in ink and is truly indelible. The manipulations here are slight, but make for an absolutely beautiful S/J story. Green is said to be a calming color.  Perhaps that is why this soft shade was chosen as a backdrop for one of the most angsty scenes between Sam and Jack, ever. Both tempers flared in that confrontation, but starlover chose to highlight those intense gazes and the dance they constantly do between stepping too close and pushing too far away. The vibrant colors of the screen captures only intensify those already fierce looks between them and force us to wonder just what went down between these two during that decade we didn't get to see.

It's hard to tell where one of them ends and the other begins. *sigh* There is such a contrast between Sam and Jack but it's a contrast that ultimately combines them in such a way that the result is a perfect balance between darkness and light.  Both have their demons and both know just how to pull the other away from them. As always (no pun intended), Angie uses the colors in such a way to really accent the characters and despite not being able to see all of their faces, the intensity between them still shines through.

Absolutely brilliant is the best way to describe this fabulous piece of S/J artwork. It is positively mesmerizing! Just look at the way the images blend and flow from scene to scene and letter to letter. The light coloring of the background really makes the images pop and the way the the scenes fill the letters you are forced to really look at them in order to read the quote.  Definitely a piece that merits a great big *Shippy Sigh*!

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!  If Sam and Jack had a wedding announcement this could totally be the one. starlover brings us a wonderfully shippy moment that we all truly wish could have been a real S/J moment. It's soft and sweet and the light background really makes your eyes focus on the gorgeous image of our two favorite people and the absolute joy on their faces.

Jasmina has such an eye for color and you can see that in many of her S/J works.  Her use of color here is no exception.  Look at the way the colors blend from image to image.  From the green of the background to the green of Jack's BDU jacket and even the bracelet on Sam's wrist.  Little details that all blend together as she breaks down this wondrous S/J moment. A look, some tears, and a C'mere, all come together to put this on the top of the list of best shippy moments.

Nothing good can ever come of Jack's boredom, right?  Pencils will be twirled, paper balls will be juggled, and no doohickey is safe from his touch. But...according to SCIMM we'll go from a very bored Jack and Sam to a wonderfully shippy S/J "fishing" expedition.  I think that's something we all can live with! SCIMM has a subtle way of manipulating the colors, and that combined with her cute banter-like text that accompanies each screen cap creates a very cute S/J ficlet.  Fish on friends, fish on. (Be sure to click on the link above to see the full piece.  Only two panels have been reproduced for this blog entry.)

And you thought angst was just for fanfiction and videos...tsk, tsk. This is such a wonderful scene between Jack and Janet (and it reveals another hint of her knowledge of the deep feelings between Jack and her best friend). She is so gentle and the hitch in her voice really brings the emotion through. But, it's Jack's amazing reaction to the thought of removing Sam from life support that makes this moment so wonderfully angsty and totally shippy. The use of darkness and light in this piece really brings the symbolism of this forbidden relationship to life.  As the darkness surrounds Jack, Sam is his light.  How can he willingly extinguish that light after all of the revelations they've had up to this point? This piece is truly wonderful.

You're staring aren't you?  You can't help it because despite the serious images of our favorite twosome on the left, the blending and placement of the images and the brightness in the middle really pulls our ship-colored glasses covered eyes to those wonderful kisses.  Once there, we just can't look away.  Beautiful job!
