Men Ship Too? An Interview with a Nominator...

Want to know what's keeping this amazing fandom going and keeping the awards committee on their toes?

It's all of you, of course! Without awesome fans to promote the work of other awesome fans, this whole awards process would be pointless.

With that in mind, today we offer you some insight into the mind of someone we don't often get to hear about...the male shipper! What's that? You didn't know that there are guys out there with fluffy feelings and angsty ambitions? Think again!

Over on Gateworld, iiradned is best known for keeping the Sam Carter/Amanda Tapping Thunk Thread and the Helen Magnus/Amanda Tapping Thunk, Discussion, and Appreciation Thread both alive and kicking. Always posting the best pics of the beautiful AT and keeping us informed of her comings and goings, including tweets, interviews posted on YouTube, or other tidbits from the internet, iiradned been a part of the GW community since 2008.

In the real world, he brings his love of the ship all the way from the Phillipines, but in the shippy world, he's a self-professed "flufferist" who "dwells near the Gutter under the Clouds of Fluff." And though he declares a love for that neighborhood, a place all shippers like to visit every now and again, he loves to read all kinds of stories as long as there's an S/J twist to them.

So how did he become a shipper? That's simple. Back before anyone had ever heard of TiVo or a DVR, we "taped" our favorite TV shows using a piece of ancient technology known as the VCR. iiradned says his VCR is responsible for helping him don his shipper-colored glasses. He found SG-1 while the show was in syndication and started setting his VCR to tape it every night it was on. One night he happened to tape both Upgrades and Divide and Conquer on the same tape...the rest as they say is history!

Originally drawn to the fandom by the dynamic relationship between Sam and Jack, and his love for the ship of his OTP, he remains an active participant on the ship-related threads on Gateworld. In fact, that's how he learned about the Sam and Jack awards.

The Sam and Jack Multimedia Awards focus on fanworks in many different categories since shippers are lovers of all kinds of fanworks. iiradned is no exception. He says he is strictly a "consumer," but he loves to read shippy stories, ogle shippy art, and watch as many shippy vids as possible. In fact, over the last five years, he guesstimates that his personal total of fanworks viewed and read easily numbers at or above the 400 mark!

When asked about why he chose to participate by nominating The Gulf Between by Mrs.Swords (who is also nominated for Best New Author), iiradned simply and elegantly stated that "I nominated the work because it was well-crafted and I enjoyed it tremendously and thought it needed to be recognized."

That my shippy friends is an excellent summary of why these awards exist! It is because fans like iiradned are willing to share their love of the fandom, and promote the works that other fans continue to create to honor the fandom, that these awards remain possible. And, the awards committe hopes that like iiradned, so far you all "like what you see."
